From May 25 to 28, the National Guard of Ukraine took a training course on “Physical safety of transportation of radioactive materials.” It was attended by representatives of the National Guard, which specializes in the protection of nuclear power plants, the protection of nuclear materials and dangerous goods during transportation.
This is not the first time such training has been conducted at the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant. The course was developed by the Training Center for Physical Protection, Accounting and Control of Nuclear Material. George Kuzmych Institute of Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv) with the participation of specialists from the Main Directorate of the National Guard and with the support of the Threat Reduction Agency (USA).
During the week-long training, the course participants got acquainted with the IAEA recommendations and the best examples of ensuring the safety of nuclear materials, Ukraine’s international obligations and domestic legislation in this area, received detailed information on nuclear materials transported through our country and used at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The theoretical part provided acquaintance of listeners with development and operation of system of physical protection of concrete transportation of nuclear materials. As part of the practical training of skills in the protection and defense of the railway train with nuclear materials from the attack of a sabotage-terrorist group, several introductory ones were practiced according to the script.
Among them – carrying out a special operation on the release of the train from terrorists who conditionally seized nuclear materials, and repelling an attack on a guard accompanying nuclear fuel. At the beginning and at the end the students passed the entrance and final exams.
At the end of the course, participants received the appropriate certificates.
