This year our Chernobyl Exploration Group glasses are being sold to raise funds for a former liquidator who needs a new wheelchair.
Evgeny, born in 1951, worked in the liquidation of the Chernobyl disaster.
The Chernobyl liquidators were the civil and military personnel who were called upon to deal with consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union on the site of the worst nuclear disaster in history. The liquidators are widely credited with limiting both the immediate and long-term damage from the disaster.
According to the World Health Organisation, 240,000 recovery workers were called upon in 1986 and 1987 alone. Altogether, 600,000 people are officially recognised as liquidators.
According to Vyacheslav Grishin of the Chernobyl Union, the main organization of liquidators, “25,000 of the Russian liquidators are dead and 70,000 disabled, about the same in Ukraine, and 10,000 dead in Belarus and 25,000 disabled”, which makes a total of 60,000 dead (10% of the 600,000 liquidators) and 165,000 disabled.
Evgeny has been ill since 2013, his wife Lyubov takes care of him. It has become very hard for them to travel, as Slavutych city has no public transport provisions and their wheelchair is old, uncomfortable, and difficult for a 70 year old lady to push.
For this reason we are aiming to raise €1,000 to help this Chernobyl Hero.
We will provide him with a new electric wheelchair, with a proper back support and give him the freedom to move around as he wishes, reinstating his independence without needing to rely on an old chair and his wife to help him with his mobility.
