Valery Khodemchuk Memorial

This memorial is located within the Chernobyl Nuclear Powerplant and is dedicated to Valery Khodemchuk, a Pump Operator who was 35 years old when he was killed and buried in the debris from the explosion. Valery is recognised as the first victim of the Chernobyl disaster. Behind the memorial is a thick concrete wall that was built to separate the ruined Reactor 4 from the still operational Reactor 3. Reactor 3 continued to operate until December 2000.
