Dentists in the Soviet Union were very different to what we are used to today. There was no preventative maintenance like we are now used to. Visits to the dentist were only made when things got bad.
Anaesthetic was only used when cavities were really bad, minor ones were drilled and filled without any pain relief… As a result, people would only visit the dentist when the problem was bad enough to warrant anaesthetic
